Investigated fan monetization strategies, including digital albums, chart voting privileges, and artist-branded customizations.
Key Insights & Findings
Content Windowing & Paid Access
Limited Free Listening: Non-VIP users on QQ Music can only listen to one-minute previews of VIP songs, and this snippet may start from any part of the track. On NetEase Cloud Music, free users are restricted to only the first 30 seconds of VIP songs.
Exclusive Digital Albums for SVIP: SVIP members can access most paid digital albums for free, while non-SVIP users must purchase them individually. Some albums remain under copyright restrictions and are unavailable even to premium users.
Temporary Free Access to VIP Content: QQ Music periodically offers limited-time free access to VIP songs as a marketing strategy to encourage VIP subscriptions.
Limited-time Free Trials: Both QQ Music and NetEase allow non-VIP users to enjoy 30 minutes of VIP music in exchange for watching advertisements.
Fan Engagement & Monetization
Higher Fan Voting Power: QQ Music VIP & SVIP members have higher voting quotas on music charts, giving them more influence over rankings.
Customization Perks: SVIP members get access to personalized avatars, player skins, dynamic lyrics, and exclusive app icons.
Integrated Promotion Tools: SVIP members receive discounts on MusicPush, an in-app promotional tool that enables fans, artists, and labels to boost song visibility and engagement metrics.
